Thousands glaciers of ice on Mars – NU.nl

radar has shown that they contain enough frozen water to cover the planet with a thick layer of ice over 1 meter.

It is about 150 billion cubic meters of water. Researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen this week in the journal Geophysical Reseach Letter .

On images from satellites orbiting Mars, researchers have the form can perceive the glaciers.

For a long time researchers did not know whether the ice consisted of frozen water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) or that it was mud. Scientists in Copenhagen have now able to determine that it is frozen water.

“We have measurements with radar equipment in the past decade watched to see how thick the ice is and how it behaves ” says Nanna Bjørn Karlsson. ” We compared that with how glaciers behave on earth and it allowed us to create models. ”
