The unwritten rule that candidates should publish at least four articles, creates great pressure on all concerned . There is hardly time to apply the knowledge gained in the clinic.
The Rathenau Institute held twelve group discussions pressure to publish a total of 78 PhD students, postdocs, professors and four Dutch professors UMC’s. All respondents sighed that in addition to drawing there, review and citing articles less and less space to read articles and knowledge to work for the clinical work.
The pressure to publish results in undesirable side effects. Scientists cut findings in several articles and barely have time to assess whether results are reproducible. “Medical research in the Netherlands is likely to get stuck,” concludes the institute.
According to the Rathenau Institute is the solution to part of the problem in the hands of the Dutch medical scientists. So the professors of medical schools could abolish the unwritten rule at least four publications for PhD students. As a result there will be more air in the system and the assessment of the PhD another case of the promoters, and not the editorial boards of medical journals.
