The problems with the Russian Progress 59 supply ship have not been resolved, so the spacecraft can be considered lost. The capsule is currently back on the earth and will soon burn up in the atmosphere.
Actually Progress 59 yesterday arrive at the International Space Station three tons of stock – including food, fuel, experiments and supplies for astronauts – to deliver. Unfortunately, the Russian space agency does not get a grip on the capsule. Progress 59 already takes a couple of days uncontrollably about its axis. Attempts to stabilize the spacecraft have failed to date
Yesterday, there appeared a video-line, which clearly shows how the capsule spins at high speed:.
Total loss
astronauts Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko left this week to The Associated Press that the spacecraft already ‘ total loss is explained by the Russian space agency Roskosmos. Progress 59 is currently losing altitude, causing the spacecraft somewhere between 7 and 11 May will burn in the atmosphere. Normally burn Progress spacecraft above the Pacific Ocean. Suppose that certain components survive the trip through the atmosphere, then these parts splashes into the ocean. Since the Russians can not direct the path of Progress 59, there is a small chance that parts of the Progress capsule on land countries. Fortunately, our planet for two-thirds of water and is only three percent inhabited area.
Alternatives
While it is unfortunate that a lot of stock and expensive spacecraft lost, it is not a major problem for astronauts on the International Space Station. They will not starve or dehydrate, since there are plenty of stocks available in the space lab. In addition, the astronauts on the ISS are not only dependent on Progress capsules. There are also many capsules Dragon and Cygnus capsules gescheept to the ISS. And of course, our own European Space Agency some sort Progress XXL, namely the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). The ATV can carry three times more stock than a Progress capsule.
