Dutchman named head Ebola UN mission in West Africa – NU.nl

The 55-year-old Graaff working since October last year in Liberia, where he directs various UN projects to combat Ebola. In his new position, he follows the Mauritanian diplomat Ould Cheikh Ahmed on Saturday who was appointed UN Special Envoy to Yemen.

The special Ebola Council mission was launched in September last year. The outbreak of the deadly disease in West Africa at that time had reached its peak. The mission is managed from Ghana.

In particular, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have been hard hit by the Ebola outbreak. Since the beginning of the outbreak in late 2013 these countries together more than 10,000 people deceased from the disease. More than 26,000 people have been infected
