Review: Samsung Galaxy S6 stops annoying TouchWiz in a … – PC World

Samsung with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge two of the best modern Android phones delivered that are available so far. We were allowed to work with the phone and looked at Samsung’s latest flagship

First, let’s explain the difference between the two models. The ‘normal’ S6 is the standard version of the phone, which most closely resembles its predecessor. The S6 Edge is a somewhat more unique model. Who namely two ‘bent’ screen edges (the edges). Bending as it were, over the edge of the screen to go. Gimmick that we saw earlier in the Galaxy Note 4, also known as special ‘edge’ version was released.

We could for this review to get started with the Edge, that 120 euros on top of the ordinary ‘variant costs. Both models are also in all other aspects of the same.

The ‘Edge’

The ‘Edge’ is designed for two things. On the one hand there are some extra features to which you can use the edge like a news ticker to read notifications. On the other hand, it is primarily a case of aesthetics: It looks simply stunning in

Surprising effect
!
That edge has a surprising effect. Most smartphones still feel as devices with a screen, but the S6 Edge is different: It’s like looking at a screen that happens to have the features of a smartphone
.

Useful / redundant functions

Also, Samsung does have hung a number of functions on the edge, who feel rather forced and not very useful. Hey if phone is in standby you can undertake by swiping up and down to read the time -. Useful but not much faster than just turn the screen

You can also five places shortcuts to the side. There you can hang several contacts so that you can call quickly by swiping from the edge of the screen inside.

Gorgeous but fragile housing

of the S6 The housing One of the best aspects of the device, which looks gorgeous and chic. The previous Galaxy phones never felt quite firmly. The cheap plastic housings for example the S5 really was not worth the price, but Samsung has listened to the criticism and the housing on the S6 completely overhauled. In one fell swoop the S6 looks much firmer, though it feels entirely too fragile to some.

Glass back

The back of this handset is made of glass. That looks nice, but also feels very fragile to. You certainly at the Edge in a vulnerable device owned by the glass ‘edges’, and there is now also a glass back in. You want your device from 700 euros not just dropping piece, but that can be easily done with the S6 …

Literally excellent camera

Moreover, a major drawback of the design, however, that the camera as far protrudes to the outside. The lens is very vulnerable when you put the unit on the back – what you do quickly because you do not want to damage the screen

Strange in hand

However, the Edge feels strange in your hand – almost like the phone wrong to hold. The flat back and round the front make the S6 Edge ‘wrong’ feels, and it feels more comfortable when you turn it in your hand. Maybe it’s because we have not long enough to have walked around with the device, but in the few days we Edge had we could get used to it but not.

Crystal Clear Screen

The screen is crystal clear, with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Samsung is known for making beautiful screens (just look at our review of the Galaxy Tab 10.1), and also in this device has not skimped on screen quality. Brilliant colors come forward on the AMOLED screen, all you have to do before choosing the right configuration.

Difference S5?

You on the other hand also conclude that the pixel density also on the S5 was already so well that you can with the naked eye but hard to distinguish what is the difference. Actually, all of that should not hurt. The Galaxy S6 has the best smartphone screen that is available at this time.

Reflective

Yet it is in the S6 Edge somewhat annoying that the screen is very reflective. The sides reflect the sun every time on the side, which is quite annoying. The main screen will go significantly further reflect light, which is even noticeable when you’re inside (eg in the train).

Excellent battery life

S6 of the battery is on paper much less powerful than that of its predecessor (2,550 mAh versus 2,800mAh the S5). This is surprising because you would expect that a new unit would get just more battery life, but in practice, the battery life is not so bad.

The number of mAh fortunately not the only way the battery to extend, and Samsung has also released some handy tricks on octacore processor to let go longer battery pack. The technical details, we will save you, but the end result is that the battery of the S6 easily last a day. We can even say that it’s something last longer than the S5.

High-speed camera with much acuity

One of the biggest pluses of the S6 is the camera, because wow, what which is fast and sharp. Samsung understands that you particularly quickly need a smartphone camera, so the camera is standard in a standby mode which you have taken a photo in no time. Also saving the pictures is very fast (by the powerful processor), so you can easily take several pictures in succession.

Few pixels, much result

Although the lens ‘only’ has 16 megapixels (and not 20 as originally thought) get sharp photos with the device. Even in the dark makes the S6 sharp pictures thanks to the low aperture that you can set.

Add that provides the camera app many choices for manually setting your shutter speed and aperture, and you have a camera that is no longer inferior to professional SLRs.

Powerful processor can even slow TouchWiz on

Although Samsung in the S6 still uses it often castigated TouchWiz is A unit of the fastest we have ever used. Tocco was hated by many users because the skin was considerably slower make the previous Galaxy phones. That is not the case, because the octacore processor in the S6 makes TouchWiz running almost effortless.

Additional Features

The Galaxy S6 contains a lot of additional features, such as a fingerprint scanner on the home button (which we already saw in the S5). The S6 has a feature called Samsung Pay, its own payment service from Samsung that you can pay wirelessly stores. However, this is oment Samsung Py not (yet) supported in the Netherlands, so you have nothing to presently there.

Multitasking

As with the S5 and Galaxy tablets you can multitask with this phone. If your app switcher longer hold, you can run two apps on one screen half. So you can run both the browser and WhatsApp together, so you do not have to switch between apps.

Still much bloatware

Bloatware has always been Samsung’s biggest problem. Older Galaxy models were always packed with apps where you not to wait, but Samsung is trying to make steps in there.

As. A Lot. Apps.

Unfortunately, that is not much better on the Galaxy S6. No, I do not necessarily those health app. No, I use the Play Store already so I do not even Samsung’s own Galaxy Apps’ shop. And I’ll pick myself if I want to use my smartphone as a remote control, thus you do not need to install the Smart Remote app. And that ‘S Planner’ I do not.

No freedom

Samsung also has the S6 an annoying habit of saying how you use your phone. If you pull down notification screen, you see there is always the ‘S Finder stand, a dedicated search bar which you can find documents or apps on your phone. Yeah, maybe that’s convenient for some people. But I’d like to use Google Now, taking you into the Google bar can do the same. Samsung, let me just do it! If I want, let me that ‘S Finder then remove!

There are even more options now. There is Tocco the standard, but there is also the Tocco Easy. That can be used alongside Google Now Launcher, which is also present. The difference between the two is that the Easy-to-use version which is easier, with fewer buttons and large icons. Maybe that says enough about the original TouchWiz.

determine Samsung

The problem with Samsung’s software is not only that installing the bloatware, but the general feeling that Samsung does even determines what the is best for you. So stand to an inexplicably bizarre reason all the apps in your app drawer at random. They are not in alphabetical order, and that’s not changing.

Even when setting the phone constantly get the idea that Samsung is trying to force you into their ideal situation. Whether you already want to create a Samsung account, whether you want to receive special offers Samsung …. No, Samsung, we do not need it!

No removable battery and memory

The best example is perhaps that it is no longer possible to replace the battery of the device, or to expand the memory via Micro SD. Well that’s at least 32 GB of storage is no longer necessary, but you feel limited -. All that many people will not make again

Improve

During the announcement the S6, during the Mobile World Congress this year, Samsung said that it is TouchWiz wanted to “improve” by “listening to the users.” Samsung says that every year, with each new device, and invariably means more apps, more widgets, and thus even more delay in the OS. Also in the S6 has been promised, but mostly it was going to fewer options – Samsung says that the abundance of users were standard was installed apps. That is only partially successful, because although some apps (such as S Health) or be removed, there are at least as many apps that are included by default.

Microsoft Apps
>
For example, are quite a number of Microsoft apps such as OneNote, Office, and Skype. If you do not use that, fat breakdown. You can make them almost invisible, so you do not suffer from it, but the apps keep working memory space and eat in the background. Also WhatsApp is installed by default, and some apps like the S Planner (Samsung’s own agenda) can not be removed.

Samsung with the S6 was on the path to its own Android skin more practical, but it still has to go a long way. But hey, it’s a start!

Astronomical price

Where we at least about fall, the price of the device. For a premium phone because you pay also the premium price, and for the cheapest S6 you count anyway € 689, – down. Need more storage space (yes, because the memory is not to extend micro-sd)? Then you pay 100 or even 200 extra (for the 64GB or 128GB).

Want to those sexy Edge? Then count only 120 euros more when your phone – making you the device between € 689, – or € 1.049, – resigns

Justify
.? >
The question is at the Edge of the extra 120 euros are justified. How wonderful the device may be, we still have no answers there. The curved edges are a nice gimmick that is finished very well, but that do not really add much. No 120 euros, in any case.

Conclusion

Samsung with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge delivered two high-end devices. Yet Samsung holds the reins still a little too firmly in control with regard to the software, as TouchWiz is still too present. The restrictions which apps you may or may not remove its still annoying, and Samsung closed environments feel sometimes oppressive.

On the other a crisp screen opposite, as one of the best cameras we ever have seen. Moreover, the phone is very fast, has a more than decent battery life, and works in all respects nearly perfect. You may have to swallow the price tag of € 689, – but you do get one of the best Android phones you can buy at the moment
