More than three-quarters of Volendam couples with a child can be tested for four genetic diseases that are common in the village. This will prevent the birth of seriously ill children.

A special clinic of the AMC and the VUmc in Volendam screens since 2012 on serious diseases causing death or serious young children often become disabled.

It is a metabolic disease, a disease of the small brains, have called brozebottenziekte and a disease in which children do not move in the womb, gewrichtsverstijvingen and a few days after birth will die.

About one in three Volendam is a carrier of one of these diseases, which is very much. That’s because many Volendam descended from approximately seven to twenty families Volendam ever founded. That increases the chance that a couple is a carrier of the same hereditary disease: a child of two carriers has 25 percent chance of getting the disease.

Each year, born in Volendam around 250 children. Without screening would be two to four of these children is one of the four genetic diseases, clinical geneticists estimate VUmc and AMC. Through the centuries in Volendam many seriously ill children born of whom no one knew what they were wrong.

Thanks to genetic research in the past decade has become much more clear about the disease and can be detected in the DNA. If both parents are carriers, they can opt for embryo selection, in which a healthy embryo is placed in the uterus. They can at eleven, twelve weeks of pregnancy leave to do a CVS test showing whether the fetus is healthy or sick
