The first of the new year, of course, concerned a copy on New Years Day, with a nice fireworks animation to convey. What 2015 – except probably a new version of Windows and Office, a fresh iPad and some more of that sort of thing – will bring natural nobody knows. Therefore, let’s just start from the good and hope for a healthy and well in 2015

By the way: did you know that the very first Google doodle already appeared 17 years ago? To be precise, on August 30, 1998, dedicated to the Burning Man festival

Dutch startups get more than 500 million in 2014 – Bright

Dutch startups were good in terms of investment, last year. The final score stands at 500.1 million euros.

StartupJuncture, a blog that tracks closely as possible investments in startups Dutch, presents this total figure. At the last minute this number was much higher due to the investment in the company Adyen 200 million. This provides a variety of shops and startup companies (Facebook and Airbnb are among the clientele) virtually all payment types. Adyen is followed by Takeaway.com, parent company of Thuisbezorgd.nl that picked 74 million. The top 3 finishes with Elasticsearch, a data company that search functions and analyzes executes include Yelp, Facebook, Sony.

Over a million

We are totally in done 75 investments, at least, as recorded by StartupJuncture. The list looks quite accurately. What is striking is that there are 33 companies that fetched more than a million in investments. In the Netherlands, namely that no sinecure. Here the quantity of depends bootstrapping to each other, smaller amounts around two tons, as indicates StartupJuncture.

Yet striking that this year more than forty percent of all investments above a million. Who knows, we break through the next few years the trend of small investment rounds? To ever be able to make Silicon Valley-like growth, it is necessary. The problem lies especially in the early investment rounds, where large investments pick is still very difficult.

Question of definition

Earlier NRC Q already came with an overview of investments in the Dutch startup world. They were much lower (62 million), partly due to their narrower definition of what a Dutch startup. Companies like eg mint Solutions (founded in Iceland, but by participating in Startup Bootcamp HighTechXL remained in the Netherlands) were not counted because they are not one hundred percent of Dutch origin.

A bit silly, because the investment, the jobs and deliver what matters is certainly in favor of the Dutch economy. And of course it is a great sign that startups from abroad to establish themselves here. A starting point for the Startup Delta Neelie Kroes.

Facebook blunder with painful annual reviews and apologizes – Techzine

The social network Facebook thought to have invented a fun action by offering an automated video in which the highlights of users were listed. In some statements inadvertently came very negative moments back. Facebook offers an apology to affected users.

Facebook offers users an overview with moments of 2014, based on what they have posted on the social network. However, there appears not to take into consideration the fact that users are not only nice things places, but also about the death of a close writing. Such cases may nevertheless be returning in the movie with the text “It was a great year. Thank you that you have been part of it.”

Although well intentioned, the films can So rather evoke negative memories. Eric Meyer for example lost his daughter to a brain tumor, nota bene on her sixth birthday. Meyer already counting on that list him that sad moment would remember and ignored it. But Facebook insisted and went fragments show the movie, often including photos of his daughter with the text “Eric, and saw your year out.” Although that statement absolutely knocked it raises no fine memory and what Eric concerned, it is not to Facebook to have to remind him that.

Meyer suggests some adjustments, such as a system that takes into account users who have not had a good year. So should the photos not be combined with texts that have a certain load, which may cause them easy these situations. Also, it would be better if users are asked whether they even like to see the overview. Do they want at a particular time does not, then there could still be asked later to be reminded of, or not.

Speaking through product manager Jonathan Gheller Facebook offers an apology for people affected by a film with a negative charge. The criticism of users will be taken for the development of any new versions.

Annual Review Facebook is wrong – Telegraaf.nl

The annual video that Facebook automatically compiles based on photos that users on social media posts, does not always seem to fall on fertile ground. The social media giant receives many thumbs down. Unintentionally, people will be reminded of painful events in their lives

.

The American Eric Meyer was downright shocked when he’s photo his recently deceased daughter to cancer on the home screen of his “Year in Review” saw being surrounded by animations of partygoers. Facebook had standard personalized text “Eric, and saw your year out!”.

Other Facebook users are not enough to talk about this “spontaneous gesture” of Facebook. The social media giant forget that not everyone was a bang in 2014 year. Another Facebook user saw a picture back of his now ex-wife with her new lover she had met during the holidays.

Facebook has not sufficiently realized that the algorithm that makes the statement, ignores changes conditions.

In several comments it sounds reproach back that the developers of these Facebook application realize enough that a year can go wrong. “The average age of a Facebook employee is 31 years,” says a complainant. And 20-year-olds do not realize that life is finite. Especially in Silicon Valley where the trees to the sky seem to grow, walk many blinkered

Facebook’s Your year in a nutshell can sometimes be very painful – WebSonic.nl

As a Facebook user you probably have seen the opportunity to create their own annual review entitled, Your year in a nutshell. It is a feature of the social network, which now returns every year and should provide an overview of the funniest and best moments of the year. This is just not always so apparent this year.

The list is generated automatically for each user and this is by an algorithm include looking at the messages and photos with the most likes and comments. So also appear so there sad messages in the annual review which can be very confrontational. A sad example comes from the United States of web designer Eric Meyer. In his annual statement was immediately placed a photo of his six year old daughter in the spotlight who died this year from the effects of cancer, in addition to the photo dancing people were shown and above the photo text Here’s what your year looked like! .

eric_meyer_jaaroverzicht_facebook

Logically very painful for Eric. He said that the problem in the code that is automatically compiles the news and understands that these situations are difficult to capture. It is not easy to programmatically figure out if a picture Has A ton or Likes Because It’s hilarious, astounding, or heartbreaking . A simple solution would be to place according to Eric a picture on top of the annual standard. Also it would be better to ask the user first if they want to see a personal annual or not.

Jonathan Gheller, product manager Year in Review on Facebook has contacted Eric and apologized, it is not clear whether and what Facebook will do with the solutions. It should also be noted that the first annual review and may be adjusted in terms of messages and photos to share with friends in the news though this possibility can never prevent the above.
