The process is described in the specialized magazine Human Reproduction.
When the woman was 13 years old, she was treated with chemotherapy and many medications for sickle cell disease, a disease in which red blood cells can carry less oxygen. Belgian doctors decided to remove ovarian tissue from her body and freezing, so that they might later still children could get.
Ten years later, the tissue was put back, and the woman herself again eggs began to produce . More than two years later became the wife pregnant. Last November, her son was healthy in the world. “It was a fantastic moment,” says gynecologist Isabelle Demeestere of the Erasmus Hospital in Brussels.
