Delft scientists grow bacteria in form of letters – NU.nl

They have individual bacteria of the species E. coli include a round, square and triangular given appearance.

Also, the researchers forced the organisms to grow in the form of letters so that some bacteria together the name TU Delft formed.

With the uniquely shaped cells, researchers can special processes of proteins in the bacteria studied better, they report in the journal Nature .

Cell division

The E.coli bacteria found in the human intestine and is normally rod-shaped and only 3 micrometers long.

During testing, the bacteria in special geometric forms was “cast” to grow the organism in a special nanomal ‘: a tiny punnet square, circular or triangular. Also, there were some giant bacteria were grown which were thirty times greater than normal.

by the bacteria in this odd shapes “stretching out”, the scientists may have special waves of proteins to study to ensure that the organisms eventually themselves can multiply from one to two cells.

Just before cell division occurs, the proteins affecting as it were, the shape of the bacteria, so that the body then knows exactly where he should share half himself.

Artificial Life

By studying this process, the scientists hope to gain new insights into the process of cell division in bacteria. Hopes eventually lead researcher Cees Dekker with the new knowledge medications and perhaps even develop artificial organisms.

“The unraveling of this process is essential to properly understand the process of cell division of bacteria, which would be new types of antibiotics can lead, “he explains on the news of the TU Delft .

” The ultimate goal is to artificially build a living cell, because that is the only way to truly essential To understand how life works “
