Online social media have gained a permanent place in both the Dutch consumers and businesses. This is evident today by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) published figures. The institute’s social media use over the past three years mapped out.
According to the CBS in 2012 was 65 percent of the Dutch active on social media or network (including Twitter). The following year it rose slightly to 69 percent, to come out this year at 81 percent. Adoption rates in the industry lags behind, according to the survey. In 2012 it was found only 35 percent of companies (with more than ten employees) in the Netherlands on a social network. That percentage rose to 46 in 2013 and the end of 2014 stood at 53. Also, when it comes to blogs (both regular blogs and Twitter posts), the Dutch business is relatively conservative. In the year 2014 used only 32 percent of the companies is a (micro) blog as a communication with the audience. Nevertheless, Dutch companies play a leading role in Europe, as noted CBS. Ireland is the number one when it comes to the use of social networks by industry (58 percent), but the Netherlands is in second place with 53 percent. Norway occupied the third place with 51 percent. At the bottom of the list are Germany (31 percent), Italy (29 percent) and Poland (18 percent).
According to the CBS researchers, social networks also become extraordinarily popular among over-45s: in 2012, half of this age group active on such sites, two years later, that percentage had risen to 92 percent. The youth (aged 12 to 25 years) are almost all active in social networks. The CBS report is free available on the website of the institute.
