Samsung claims doubling phone battery – NU.nl

That the scientists report in a study published in Nature .

Lithium-ion batteries have a negative and positive part, with energy when using negative flows to the positive side. At current storage batteries negative side is often made of graphite.

However, Samsung has made of silicon negative electrode. That increased the capacity of batteries of the same size 1.8 times compared to regular batteries.

Silicon is more often used in the manufacture of batteries, but was unsuitable up to now, because the service life was short by rapid decrease of the capacity. Samsung knows that can be prevented by layers of graphene to grow on the silicon.

Experiment

Nevertheless, there is still a question of decrease in capacity over time. Where the capacity of the battery in new form 1.8 times higher than regular lithium-ion batteries, was that after 200 charge and discharge declined to 1.5 times the capacity.

The lifetime of current lithium-ion batteries is around one thousand charging cycles, the capacity after the first 300 cycles starts to decline.

Samsung’s technology is still in experimental phase. Probably it will therefore be years before the batteries with increased capacity available in the practice
