FairPhone 2: sustainable smartphone is possible – Standard

The Dutch company FairPhone Tuesday announced its second smartphone. The company wants to demonstrate that an ‘honest smartphone’ is possible and working conditions in the electronics industry better.

The major manufacturers in the industry have seen that production can in a fair manner. Suppliers of FairPhone are encouraged to gain raw materials from mines in conflict free areas. They also track where certain metals such as copper or tin come from.

Modular

The unit is made up of modules that change by the user himself. Via contacts are wireless components connected to the PCB (printed circuit board), and these are thus largely replaced. The phone would be that it is easier to replace parts of the phone longer have to deal with.

It is the first smartphone designed FairPhone from the beginning itself. The first FairPhone, released in 2013, was a modified version of an existing device. The first FairPhone was sold 60,000 times. The FairPhone 2 to be sold about one hundred thousand times a year.

This summer in the sale

The phone will start this summer in advance for 525 euro per Unit. The Fairphone 2 in performance similar to the Samsung Galaxy S5, in 2014. The latter is, however, one hundred euros cheaper. This difference, according to the Dutch manufacturer with low production of the FairPhone, the price is not (much) up because the phone is made in a fair manner. Where Samsung phones makes millions a year, FairPhone has to do with a production of 100,000 a year.
