MRI scanner bad brains hospital staff – Yahoo! News

A solution for patients at risk for hospital staff, the MRI scanner. New research shows that MRI is bad for the brains of staff working with the scanners.

The research was done by Lotte van Nierop who graduated yesterday at the University of Utrecht. In her dissertation she wrote that the magnetic fields of the MRI scanner negatively affect memory, concentration and balance organ of the staff.

The Times Van Nierop explains: “If you move in a magnetic field can current can be generated in the brains. Brain cells communicate with each other by small streams. Moving in the magnetic field of the MRI scanner normal communications within the brains is so upset. “

The latest scanners with higher field strength work with magnets that day and night are on. Switching on and off takes a few days. Stronger magnets have the advantage that the scans are better, but are so detrimental to the staff working with them.

Van Nierop says it is difficult to draw up guidelines because of complaints by individual differences and the difficulty of pros and cons to weigh. Staff can itself reduce problems by making rapid motions with the scanner. Because patients lie still, those not affected.
