Mercury moves between the earth and sun – NU.nl

Scientists do not warn to watch the naked eye to the silhouette of Mercury, that if a black dot moves to the sun.

Mercury is the smallest planet of our solar system, with a diameter of only 4878 kilometers. It is so small that experts say you need a viewer Monday magnified fifty times. Then there is also the weather to cooperate so that the vision is clear.

The distance from the sun of Mercury varies between 46 and 70 million kilometers. The earth is about 150 million kilometers from the Sun and has a diameter of almost 13,000 kilometers.



Mini Planet

The phenomenon that the mini planet slides past the sun, is much rarer then solar and lunar eclipses. In this century, Mercury moves no more than fourteen times over the sun. The next transit of Mercury to see fully in the Netherlands, is only in 2039.

Fans of astronomy event can follow the entire afternoon in the Old Observatory in Leiden with a special solar telescope. Leiden University warns that watching the phenomenon without special protection is very dangerous to the eyes
