Group lessons at midwife better for mother and child – Yahoo! News

Pregnant women treated by midwives in groups, childbirth are better than expectant mothers individual get care. They less often ask for an epidural and require less labor generators.

This is the conclusion after TNO research into that group sessions, called Centering Pregnancy. TNO follow the same obstetrical practices 597 women receiving group care and 1610 women with individual care.

Pregnant women are usually given every few weeks so-called prenatal monitoring, which are controlled include the blood pressure of the mother and the baby’s growth. The group session control replaces that for the most part of the pregnancy. In groups of eight to twelve are pregnant women in ten sessions of two hours each. First there is the individual medical examination and then there is time for the conference. They receive guidance from a midwife and a second supervisor. There is more time for health advice.

Stop Smoking
“It is absolutely not a classroom lesson, but more of a conversation,” said Marlies Rijnders, TNO researcher and obstetrician. “It also creates a real sense of belonging. Myths dispelled and women are supporting each other. That often works better. If a pregnant firsthand tips indicates a fellow pregnant on how to stop the best smoking, then continue which better hung than if the midwife does “

the successes of Centering Pregnancy:.

  • Women getting their first child and receive group care, have significantly less frequently pain medication than women with individual guidance: 38 percent against 48 percent. They especially less often ask for an epidural
  • They also use fewer drugs to stimulate contractions:. 38 to 46 percent.
  • Women with group help start more likely to breastfeed 90 to 83 percent
  • Women who have one or more children and receive group care are less frequently turn to the gynecologist. 49 to 60 percent.
  • She gave birth less often under the supervision of a gynecologist (37 versus 56 percent) and bring their child more often in the world at home (33 to 24 percent).

the method originated in the United States and has been developed for “pregnant women from deprived backgrounds. Women from deprived neighborhoods have a higher risk of problems during childbirth. This may be for example, by an unhealthy lifestyle, a language problem, problems with housing and mental health problems. The study shows that in the Netherlands especially, these women benefit greatly from the care group.

Less stress
How to explain the successes of the Centering Pregnancy is, is not yet known, said Rijnders. “That is the million dollar question . This may have to do with less stress during pregnancy. It is likely that if pregnant women help each other more, they stop easier smoking, better with their weight are working and know better what to look at. You also see that women show up more often. So they get more, and can detect more midwives. ”

The researcher points still a problem: the group method for obstetric practices expensive because such a group is accompanied by two people. A fee for that extra investment is lacking, says Rijnders. “Therefore hesitate practices to deal with and a few practice stopped Centering Pregnancy.” That is a shame, says Rijnders because the method ultimately creates savings:. There are fewer medical interventions and referrals necessary to the gynecologist
