Review: The OnePlus X is good, but unnecessary phone – PC

After OnePlus high eye threw the OnePlus One, and a decent camera made with the OnePlus 2, the company has tried to find a middle ground: The OnePlus X. That is a midrange device, with mediocre specifications are put in a cheap smartphone. We managed to lay our hands on an invite for the OnePlus X, and laid him on the rack.

Expensive appearance

The first thing you notice about OnePlus X is surprisingly chic look, which is very different than the One and 2. In particular, the rear features on; which this time is entirely made of glass. The OnePlus logo is prominent in the middle and is now shining. The position of the camera is changed from the center to the left

a corrugated metal are the edges of the device, which device provides a very expensive look -. Much more expensive than the price of € 269, – suggests

Fragile

However, the device feels very fragile to.. That is a shortcoming of all phones such glass back (we had the same problem with the Galaxy S6), but the fact remains that you are very careful when removing it from your pocket. With the robust One (and the second) had at least you have the idea that they could take a beating. This unit feels like it’s in a million pieces explodes in one big bang, and that we find a risk for a device that you at least two years every day when you wear …

Very nice, but also very fragile

Add to that the fact that even when the device is very slippery and slippage, even if you just dough. This is partly by the display, which protrudes out of a millimeter above the rim. But that is somewhat offset by the edge that gives his ribs for grip. The fact that the phone is a bit smaller than the One and the second (5 “compared to 5.5″) makes you lie ‘em a little easier in your hand.

The terminal otherwise has the same appearance you might already know from the OnePlus 2. Unlike the One are the volume buttons above the power button on the right, the bottom has two speakers and a USB connector, on top is a 3.5mm plug – little special so

More unique is the button to the left of the device.. There’s a slide to the notifications of the unit can be set up once. The slider has three positions, ‘All notifications’,’ No notification ‘, or the’ Priority Mode. That’s a nice gimmick, but also a bit redundant because you can easily adjust the settings with the volume buttons.

Dualsim, and SD support

The OnePlus X supports two sim cards. That’s not bad for a Chinese manufacturer, but for Dutch users, it may be a luxury. It is striking that one of the two SIM card holders this time can be used to put a micro-SD card into the unit (up to 128 GB), a significant improvement over previous devices that are only in 16 GB or 64 GB were available. That makes it a lot less bad that the X is only 16 GB of internal storage, though you still have to buy an SD card with.

Prima screen

The AMOLED resolution splash your screen off

The screen of the X OnePlus almost hurts your eyes when you look at it for the first time. This is mainly thanks to the AMOLED color scheme, which makes dark colors even darker and ultimately leading to more contrast in your colors. The resolution of 1920 x 1080 on a screen of 5 “provides a PPI of 441, which is very much for such a device. In short, wow, what a screen.

Grainy camera

The camera is exactly what you expect of the device:. Midrange In good light you see enough and catch your beautiful images, but if it is a little bit darker see grains in your picture and you miss the options to manually you adjust ISO. 4K video is missing, and the lens has no optical image stabilization.

However, the pictures are good enough for most of the photos you’re trying to make, especially since he was so fast is. The colors also are less hysterical than they were at the OnePlus two-camera, all you see on the AMOLED screen have a bright color scheme on your device again. Download also just another camera app, because the default app is rather limited.

Many freedom OxygenOS

OxygenOS gives you a lot of freedom and delicious bare

The OnePlus X runs on OxygenOS, private ROM OnePlus itself has developed. OxygenOS is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and if you do see OxygenOS initially very reminiscent of CyanogenMod, the ROM which once stood on the OnePlus One. The operating system is nice bare, with only the obligatory Google apps (Gmail, Drive, Keep, etc.) installed, and surprisingly enough also OnePlus Radio.

The operating system is nice and is much improved compared to last year when version 1.0 became available. In OxygenOS 1.2 are include individually controlled app permissions, which you can specify for each application which access provided.

Also interesting is the gesture control. That way you can when carrying off certain actions screen, like the flash turn on when you draw a V or the music player, start by filling in a circle.

Beyond that, you have a pretty standard Android experience, but a good one. You do not have too much fuss, but with lots of customization freedom and we applaud only. Moreover, for the real Android fans easy to unlock the bootloader and rooting the device -. If you’re interested there in

The difficult business OnePlus

If you’re a OnePlus X are considering buying, you should know something about the company behind it. Normally we do not tell about the background, for example, Samsung or HTC, but at OnePlus is a different story.

OnePlus is a tedious business to buy something from

When the company namely furore with the One, OnePlus was almost a victim of its own success. The pressure to create a new attractive, high for a ridiculously low price was very high, and it shows in the company’s strategy. Running namely guerrilla marketing, and the invites are a common example. Which are still needed in the X, for which you can buy only if you have an invitation. Which of course did not get just because you have to get them through one of the crazy competitions issuing OnePlus, or by having luck with the completely opaque algorithm OnePlus.

Annoying invites

It still feels like an insult; you earn the privilege of giving money to OnePlus. Moreover, much of OnePlus ‘‘ Never Settle “ strategy a sham: The forums and Reddit are full of complaints from buyers, who get the brush-off when their unit failure

.

An error with the software by OnePlus invariably solved with “Did you OxygenOS been reinstalled?”, and if you prefer running CyanogenMod OnePlus you refuse to help even further in some cases. Moreover, it is a crime to send the unit back to China if you’re on a hardware defect, and in many cases you hear that your device not covered by the warranty.

That is a risk that You also take the OnePlus X. If the unlikely event something goes wrong, keep in mind that you might just have bad luck. Maybe. Because OnePlus is unclear business.

Conclusion

The OnePlus X is a good midrange device with lesser specifications than the larger OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. You notice the smaller screen, the lack of some features such as NFC, and generally cheaper parts if a weaker processor and camera lens – but you do not see much of in practice. The look gives X a premium look that certainly for the low price of € 269, – is worth. The big problem? The OnePlus One is cheaper. And even the OnePlus 2 at this time is only a few bucks more expensive, and for that money you get a device with better specifications we’ve become one of the best phones ever cried. So why would you actually buy the X? Maybe because you are a fan of OnePlus. Maybe because you want a little smaller model. But if it is to do the specifications, there is really not much reason to get the X in the house – if you already manage
