Commission sees no need for amendment assisted suicide – NU.nl

It is very few people and most of them already have “an accumulation of old age problems.” Which could amount to “unbearable and hopeless suffering.” In such cases, they can ask for euthanasia, concludes a committee of wise men chaired by Paul Schnabel.

The committee presented its opinion on ‘completed life’ Thursday Minister Edith Schippers of Health. According to members of the committee, there are few people who want to die without having medical problems

The committee also provides advice to ensure that people have finished their life. Prevent people are lonely and increase their self-reliance.

Indicted

the investigation came after the case involving Albert Heringastate. He had his 99-year-old mother helped put an end to her life and was indicted before. The court held first that Heringastate was guilty of assisted suicide, but did not impose any penalty.

On appeal, he was completely acquitted last year. Heringastate helped his mother to suicide, because a doctor did not perform euthanasia.

Questions

The VVD had requested the investigation. MP Arno Rutte said in response that “people who weighed well without pressure or coercion from outside, come to the conclusion that their life is complete” should be able to put an end to their lives.

Abuse should be prevented according to the VVD. At the same time he wants to see where the report offers clues to people who want to help end their lives.

SGP leader Kees van der Staaij sees the results of the report as an important signal to society. He sees in the claims which need to prevent people start to feel lonely. “It is very sad when old people are useless from loneliness, their lives.”

Green Left is still many questions. MP Linda Voortman find it a missed opportunity that the committee does not conclude that the law should be amended. “Even though this is a small group, their suffering is great precisely why it is important that the right to die with dignity is well regulated by law.”.
