Use Google Maps data to show efficiency solar panels – NU.nl

Project Sunroof shows how much consumers can save money by self-generating solar energy.

Before that Google uses data from Google Maps. 3D models from the map service are used to calculate how much space the roof of a building for solar panels.

This data is combined with data about the position of the sun in a year and the average temperature amount of cloud cover in a particular area. This tells Google how much energy can bring about a solar panel.

This is then translated into an annual saving on energy bills in dollars. Sunroof project is currently only in the cities of Boston, San Francisco and Fresno, but Google promises to expand in the future
