Consumers to start proceedings on the merits around Android-updates against Samsung – It

The Consumentenbond is of the opinion that Android manufacturers is much too short to offer support on their smartphones, and the association wants manufacturers minimum of four years of support after release, in a lawsuit against Samsung took the bakzeil, but now the bond on appeal with the proceedings on the merits.

The Consumer starts the case against the South Korean manufacturer Samsung, because that manufacturer at this time, the market leader, both globally and in the Netherlands. If the union succeeds in getting Samsung to enforce that smartphones have much longer to be supported, then the other manufacturers follow.

The main reason for the case is the lack of security updates, some smartphones running this much risk, because large well-known vulnerabilities will no longer be a poem. That should else find the thu, and therefore requires four years of support to the introduction of the smartphone to two years from the date of sale of the unit.

The Consumers ‘ association has already been a lawsuit filed against Samsung, but pulled out when bakzeil, the court found that the association had not shown that there is urgency for a temporary injunction. Therefore, choose the now for a case in which there is a lot of time is devoted to the interests and to reach a decision. Received today a subpoena from the Consumer.

Samsung has still not substantively responded, but the manufacturer can not in the opinion of the Consumers, because the South Korean manufacturer is one of the few that currently monthly updates from brings for a large number of devices, in which the last security updates are included. Samsung does not do this for all devices, but the policy is already better than a number of years ago.

The objective is in any case clear, to make sure that manufacturers are more and better Android devices with updates. Something that Google also would like to be, but for which no effective solution has been found.
