Scientists from University College London have discovered a way how one’s own immune system can defeat cancer. The discoverers make himself strong that it the “Achilles’ heel of cancer” is found.
Researchers at University College London have unique “markers” found in a cancerous tumor. By its own immune system to attack markers, the tumor can be overcome, even if it is already well advanced.
The researchers believe that their discovery will provide the basis for new treatments. They all hope to start within two years of pilot projects in patients.
It is not the first time that scientists are trying to program one’s own immune system that cancer cells are attacked. So far without much success. One possible explanation is that the immune system selects the wrong target.
The problem with cancer is that they all consist of the same cells. They are so mutated that even cells within the same tumor may look very different
The cells growing a bit like a tree:. They do depart from the same root, but differ more and more from each other as they split into different branches. The scientists now claim to have found a way to recognize the “family tree”.
Not for tomorrow
“This is very exciting,” says professor Charles Swanton of the UCL. “Now we can really focus on the Achilles heel of cancer. It is the ultimate form of a personal treatment, because every patient gets individual medication. “
Experts admit that the idea is promising, but warn that the new form of therapy is not for immediately. To begin the technique has yet to be tested on humans and the treatment would be costly. They warn that a miracle cure for any type of cancer is not yet immediately.
