British minister calls adblockers ‘extortion’ – NU.nl

Programs that block ads on websites are a “contemporary extortion practice,” he said Wednesday in The Guardian .

Whittingdale promised to engage with publishers, social media and developers of adblockers to address the problem.

Many publishers are worried about the rise of adblockers as this ensures that come in less advertising revenue. More and more Internet users install a AdBlocker, often to ensure that web pages load faster.

Some adblockers, including the popular Adblock Plus, let some advertisers pay money to ‘approved’ ads by letting yet. Critics say this amounts to extortion.

“If people do not pay for content than those contentious will eventually simply no longer exist,” said Whittingdale. “This applies to a new piece of journalism and for the new album by Muse.”

Whittingdale says confidence that cooperation within the Internet industry and self-regulation can provide a solution.
