Ghostly octopus species discovered near Hawaii – NU.nl

The animal was photographed by the submarine Deep Discoverer at a depth of over four thousand meters near the island Mokumanamana, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The octopus is particularly notable for the absence of pigment cells, called chromafotoren. “He did not look very muscular”, says zoologist Michael Vecchione of NOAA. On Twitter, the octopus has been named Casper, because of its similarity to the character Casper the Friendly Ghost.

“There is so little known about these deep waters that are made quite often new or unexpected discoveries” Vecchione said. “What is unusual is the chance to explore this depth.”

The animal is “almost certainly” a never documented species and may belong to a generation that has not yet been identified. However, researchers have least need a specimen to verify it, and prefer multiple sets Vecchione
