Astronaut Scott Kelly is 5 cm taller after years in space – De Morgen

After spending nearly a year aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly turns five centimeters to greater than his identical twin brother, Mark.

However Really grown Kelly is not. Under the influence of the force of gravity, after all, our spine is compressed here on earth. In the space that pressure does not exist: the vertebrae thereby expand and become astronauts thus (temporarily) higher.

However, the finding is particularly important. The aim of Kelly’s mission was, after all, to find out what a long-term space travel with a man, both physically and spiritually.

Identical tweelingbroer

After 340 days on the ISS landed Kelly Wednesday on earth. Kelly, who spent more time in space than any other US astronaut, says he broadly feels “pretty good.” His health will now be followed up last year.

A unique advantage for the doctors of NASA is that Kelly has an identical twin brother, Mark Kelly is also a former NASA astronaut. He spent on earth in the past year. The researchers can the twins who are genetically identical, compare to discover whether Scott has undergone genetic changes last year.

Mission to Mars

If NASA scientists find no major discrepancies in Scotts brains, body, or genes, that would be a big step forward can do in planning of long-term space missions, such as a trip to Mars.

A trip to Mars, however, will not be for the next ten years, but NASA is already working hard on the training of scientists and astronauts for missions to the red planet.

Scott Kelly, who looked after one year in space in their own words especially looking forward to a swim in his swimming pool in Houston, Texas.
