IFA 2015: Samsung has the IoT finally through with his … – Personal Computer Magazine

Samsung has been trying for years to make our homes smart. The company built smart refrigerators and smart washing machines, vacuum cleaners and left talking to each other. But that ecosystem had one fatal flaw: Everything in your home should be from Samsung. But the manufacturer has now resembles something gevonden.Met Smart Hub Samsung finally resolve issues with automation.

Last year (and years before) Samsung grabbed especially fink out with smart appliances such as refrigerators which gave notification when the milk ran out of a vacuum cleaner that you can control with an app. What we saw of it, always worked well, maarhet big problem is that few people count themselves as hardcore Samsung fans.

Few genuine Samsung fans

Unlike Apple or Google buy few people a Samsung device because they are such a fan of Samsung. And certainly when buying something boring like a fridge or kettle do not look you in the brand, but rather the price and availability.

Competition

Nobody is such a big fan of Samsung that he just wants Samsung at home

That gave Samsung always problems, because if users freezers and washing machines need to work together only if all of them from Samsung – and that no one does. How do you still manage to build a good home automation ecosystem that can compete with Apple and Google?

This should be achieved, through Smart Things, a system that was acquired with the purchase of the same name startup in 2013. Until now it was not known that Samsung was planning with Smart Things, but during the IFA fair is some clarity in that.

Smart Hub
>
The company presented the Smart Hub, a small box that serves as a central place for all your automation equipment. The Smart Hub, all smart devices from Samsung together so that you can operate with one app.

View Status

With this app you can for example see the status of devices; so you can check the batteries in your smoke alarm are full, but also whether your machine already has finished running. For some devices, you can be even more note: Last year we were very impressed with a fridge that you could send a picture of the inside so you can see what’s left in stock

<. strong> Control devices

You can also control certain devices. It is possible to put the laundry in the machine is loaded, or you can bring your lights on and off. It works, at least for Samsung devices, but it could in theory also work with devices from other manufacturers that are members of Samsung’s Smart Things.

From ‘stupid’ to ‘smart’

The Smart Sensors make any ‘normal’ device clever

Another problem that Samsung is struggling when it all and everybody wants to connect, is that almost no one has a smart refrigerator or washing machine. And why would you, if you buy those devices only once in 20 years? That too has been penetrated by Samsung because the manufacturer has concocted something in there.

Smart Sensors

For exactly this problem, namely the Samsung Smart Sensors, a series of sensors and connectors with different functions, which it can make any smart “dumb” device. You can think of a motion sensor, which goes off when something moves into the neighborhood, but also can perform an action when a specific event occurs. For example, imagine that you walk into your home, then the motion sensor to automatically turn on the lights.

Another sensor is the moisture detector, which you can put on the floor so you get a notification when a leak occurs .

Smart plug

But perhaps the most practical device is a smart plug. That’s nothing more than an adapter where an ordinary plug in matches, but you can toggle on and off from a distance. That way you can control from the app to your coffee to go. This is useful for many devices that are still not smart at all, but you do not want clever make – very few people want to spend 200 euros on a “smart” coffee

Home automation is made only by other developers.

Third Party Applications

Samsung kit exists by virtue of other developers – after all, no one wants to buy anything from Samsung. There are already quite a few developers who took the kit to get started. So you can Hue Philips lamps on and off via the app, and there are smart locks or security cameras that can be operated with it.

Open API

In addition, the API of Smart Things open so that any developer can get to work. That means that theoretically you can create your own home automation equipment such as a Raspberry Pi, which can control from the Smart Hub. However, it requires quite a bit of programming, so that not everyone will get together.

It is not clear how home automation devices from other makers work with the Smart Hub. For example if you buy a smart washing machine from LG, which probably will not work with just one device from Samsung. And that’s still a bit of a shame.
