Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is the big brother of the Lumia 640. As we know from the Lumia smartphones are Design and specifications are almost identical, but the same is true in daily use? You read it in the Wednesday Review.
Our review of the smaller Lumia 640 can be read here.
Design and Screen
The Lumia 640 XL has a sharp but solid case. The impressive 5.7 inch screen gives this smartphone a giant face, which confirmed once again what you’re gripping it. Where his little brother is still quite manageable, this kite is definitely not for the Lumia 640 XL: two-handed operation is necessary. Advantage of the big screen is that typing is very pleasant.
Despite the relatively low resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, the screen looks fine. Thanks to the ClearBlack display everything is fine to read the screen even in bright sunlight. The display features Gorilla Glass 3, which gives the front a scratch-resistant protective layer. That can not be said so from the back, which feels quite susceptible to scratching. The back panel can be easily replaced by another fresh tan, a nice addition to Microsoft hopes that users will more personalize their device.
Camera
The camera of Lumia 640 XL has a received modest upgrade over the smaller version: 13 MP instead of 8 MP at the back and front of one MP 5 MP front. There also lies a Carl Zeiss lens under the enclosure. Finally, they both have a single LED flash.
Huge differences in quality but I detect not between the two models. What is immediately striking is that the color is not very strong. The colors are quickly saturated and few natural. You can see that especially in red come back good that it almost looks pink. Poorly-lit conditions, you should avoid if you want to limit the amount of noise to a minimum.
All in all, you get a reasonable, but certainly not a great camera for your money.
Software
The Lumia 640 XL runs out of the box on Windows Phone 1.8 Update 2. You can see that clearly reflected in the design. The device has a built-in search feature to quickly find apps, various settings are grouped more clearly and Microsoft has added a new permissions manager.
At least just as important is that the operating system running smoothly. In the Phone Mark benchmark, the Lumia 640 XL good test with a score between 900 and 950 points. We also tested the device with the preview version of Windows 10 Mobile, the free update later this year. The performance of the unit declined somewhat, which is also in the benchmark scores could be seen again, but Windows 10 Mobile is still far off.
Also, graphics-intensive 3D games run smoothly on the Lumia 640 XL.
Battery
In active use is of 3000 mAh easily spend a day battery life, with occasional use for two days. Charging is an issue: battery full charge takes three to four hours to complete
Conclusion
Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is a mid-range smartphone with an excellent value for money. In particular, the display and the battery life are surprisingly good. The device has a suggested retail price of 229 euro a few bucks more expensive than its smaller brother (179 euros). The difference lies in the screen size, not so much in the technical specifications or better quality camera. Or that the price difference is justified is yours.
In brief, the Lumia 640 XL is an average performer that gives you value for money.
