IFA 2015: Hands-on with the Sony Xperia Z5 – PC

Sony arrives this year with three new smartphones on the market within the Xperia Z5 line. At the IFA in Berlin berus I already went with these phones to work for a first impression.

The Xperia Z5 is a minor upgrade of the Xperia Z3 (and Z3 +, which came out in Japan as the Z4, which is why the new series is called Z5). In appearance, the device looks about the same as its predecessor: a glass back and a metal rim around the phone where the charger port is hidden behind a flap to keep the device watertight. In short, a high quality device that lies well in the hand

It is new that the power button has become much bigger. That is a reason, Sony has incorporated in a smart way the fingerprint scanner at the button on the side. So keep it minimalist appearance with no buttons on the front, yet with the ability to unlock the device with a fingerprint scanner. It looks better than the OnePlus 2, the fingerprint scanner (without button) on the front seat or the Huawei Mate S where the scanner impractical way to the rear seat unit.

You can register up to five different fingerprints and they are also linked to Android user, which is useful if you want to play like your children with the device, but in their own play environment. In addition, the fingerprint scanner unlocks impressively fast.

Colors jump off the screen

The 5.2 inch Full-HD display has remained, but it seems a lot brighter and has a color rendering that seems somewhat saturated, but it creates colors that jump off the screen. The 3GB of RAM and Snapdragon 810 processor ensuring the smooth running Android 5.1. Although this processor on other smartphones known as a fast overhittende processor. During a brief test, we noticed that it does not.

Xperia Z5 camera

The camera has been upgraded: 23 megapixel. But what is particularly striking is the rapid focus. Pleasant is that the physical shutter button is still present, so you can quickly start the camera to take a picture.

Giga Xperia Z5

In addition to the 5.2-inch version is also presented a variation of 5.5 inches, the Xperia Z5 Premium. What is immediately striking that they are so shining and especially the chrome version looks like a mirror. But the biggest upgrade is not in the finish or the format, but the screen itself. With a resolution of 2840 by 2160 (806 pixels per inch) it is really sharp. Moreover, images can be scaled from lower resolution, so they still look sharp. Especially when you look at a lot of photos and videos, this is fine. But also for virtual reality, this is a big plus.

There is also the Xperia Z5 Compact, this smaller model has a 4.6 inch screen. Unfortunately, the size is not the only thing that is screwed down, it also has a rather low resolution (1280×720) and 2GB of RAM. This while the two big brothers have an extra gigabyte. For a smartphone of 600 euros is a bit sad. The finish is a little less beautiful, the metal edges have been replaced by plastic and smartphones are somewhat duller in color.

However, the Xperia Z5 Compact continues to have a very nice size and the best choice for those not overly great looking handset.

Xperia Z5

Preliminary conclusion

We are quite impressed with the Z5 series. The recognition has remained, but the color and luster are also to distinguish the devices in the series are reciprocally. The fingerprint scanner and improved camera is a fine addition. Only it does come at a price. The Compact version will cost you 599 euros. The ordinary Z5 699 euro and Xperia Z5 premium even 799 euros. That’s an awful lot of money, even for a good smartphone.
