Today is thirty years since the Elfstedentocht was skated and won our Evert van Benthem from Sint Jansklooster.
We asked on Facebook to memories of the Elfstedentocht of 1986.
Broken but so pride
Michel Berends was just 18 years old: “100 times of trial and error, one friend left 100 kilometers skating and fifteen minutes before the closure of the day into the night along with m.” n dad going over the finish line. Joop King to Heege joined in 1986. It was his second Elfstedentocht. Later, in 1997, he skated for the third time the tour.
Top day but oh so cold
Herman Roode then 18, was at De Waag in Hengelo. “We are then with a number of people in a van drove there. It was a great day but oh so cold!”
Gezina Wiersma was in Birdaard, between Bartlehiem and Dokkum, look and Garrit Hilterman was the Bonk Canal. Marianne Kleen-Bredewold lived in Bolsward and TV masts stood by them in the backyard.
Free from work and school
Marc Paskamp that day not been to school: “My father said, do not go to school” no, am sick, “I said, but I actually found it legally truant?”
Ria Steinmeijer took a day off and the all day watching television. “Beforehand made a whole pot of pea soup, so we just did not miss, which was great. They were only in winter.”
