Sergio Cannavero would in collaboration with scientists in China the head of a monkey have successfully transplanted into a new body. Technically speaking, there is actually talk of a body transplant.
It would also researchers in South Korea have managed to cut through the spinal cord of a mouse and again attaching successful.
The British magazine, reports New Scientist , based on an interview with the doctor.
Cool
Cannavero announced early last year that he wanted to attempt to transplant the head of a cripple man from Russia a healthy body of a deceased donor.
With the head to cool the man he thinks the brains of the patient for some time to keep alive without oxygen. Further, claims Cannavero that it is possible to stimulate to connect the spinal cord of the donor on the head by the cells with a special substance, called plyethyleenglycol.
This techniques, the physician would now Chinese in co-operation with and South Korean colleagues have tested on mice and monkeys. He claims that the results of the experiments will soon be published in the journals Surgery and CNS Neuroscience .
Movie
New Scientist already have pictures of the transplanted monkey head that would otherwise not connected to the nervous system of the body donor. However Cannavero has a (somewhat shockingly) movie made public a mouse whose spinal cord would be cut and sutured again. The animal would now be able to walk again somewhat.
“I would say that we have already done enough testing to proceed with the preparations for the hoofdtranplantatie” explains Cannavero. “It is important that people no longer think that this is impossible.”
Criticism
Other scientists have critically commented on the pictures and the movie, because Cannavero the images do not substantiate with more details of the procedures in the animals.
This is considered impossible in the medical world in order to attach a severed spinal cord again. Cannavero gives patients false hope with his assertions, so many doctors warn
