The collision with the earth shattered the planet Theia. From the fragments originated the moon, but also the residues are sucked up by the earth
In other words., The earth still contains remains of the oerplaneet. This is the conclusion a group of American scientists in the authoritative scientific journal Science .
It was already known that there is a collision must have been between the Earth and Theia. That should have happened about 4.5 billion years ago when the Earth was 100 million years old. But it was not clear what was the impact of his work and what the consequences were.
Fingerprint
The researchers from the University of California looked at the chemical “fingerprint” of seven stones that astronauts have collected previously on the moon. They compared to six volcanic stones from the interior of the earth. The stones were in terms of chemical composition identical to each other, which means they must have the same origin.
These findings lead the researchers conclude that the collision must have been frontally between Earth and Theia. The rock of Theia is the bang probably mixed with those of the earth. That would explain why rocks on both bodies have no different “fingerprints”.
“The collision was so powerful and so rich in energy that the whole system was mixed in together,” principal investigator Edward Donald Young explains in news Popular Mechanics
Torn
Until now, the prevailing theory that Theia along the earth is shaved. In addition, the planet would be torn to pieces. The remains would have been in orbit around the Earth and eventually would have the moon formed.
But in that case, the stones on the moon should be different from the rocks on earth, because they have a different origin would have. According to lead researcher Young this theory can also be written off
