DiCaprio has long been known as a champion of the environment. In Before the flood, he shows the influence of climate change and the solutions that various people in the world have figured out.
He made the film together with director Fisher Stevens, who won an Oscar for his film The Cove, about the hunting of dolphins. The actor spoke for the film, among others, with president Obama, pope Francis and UN chief Ban. Before the flood was screened in the White House and at the UN.
According to DiCaprio, it is the first time that a film so massive and streaming services. Techredacteur Nando Kasteleijn calls it a smart strategy. “He would have talked about it, so then you need as many people as possible the chance to give the film to see.”
That the film without commercials, it is offered will also have to deal with, suspect Kasteleijn. “It’s not about the money, he wants the discussion to help.”
The timing of the film is important: in eight days, there are the American elections. On film screenings, that DiCaprio organizes, visitors can immediately register as a voter. “This should be an important topic in the elections,” says DiCaprio. “There is no greater threat to our society than climate change.”
