Space mission Rosetta ends after crash probe on comet 67P – NU.nl

on a collision course lying spacecraft sent until just before the planned crash yet detailed photographs of the comet to the earth. Space agency lost, as expected, the contact with Rosetta at the time that the probe is the surface of 67P hit. That happened around 13: 20 hours Dutch time.

Rosetta came after more than 6 billion kilometres to fly, ten years after the departure from earth, in August 2014 at the place of destination. Three months later, it put a landingstoestel, called Philae, on the comet. That was a unique achievement, but the landing did not go well.

The Philae bounced and came to a different place than the one intended. He stood in the shadow. Therefore, change the connection and after more than two days fell the contact way. Since then there has been for a while but again had contact.

Philae sent his information by using the probe to earth. In July of this year, ESA Philae permanently. The energy of the komeetlander was on. The explorer had been months nothing more make themselves heard. An earlier wanhoopspoging to the lander ‘to shake up’ has failed.

Discoveries

Nevertheless, brought the mission of important discoveries. So, scientists found crucial building blocks that make life on earth possible. Also discovered Rosetta oxygen molecules in a gas cloud that the comet came.

in Addition, water vapor, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and various nitrogen-, sulfur -, and carbon compounds found on 67P.

at the Beginning of this month it appeared from information collected by Rosetta that clumps of dust form the basis of comets and planets. Existing theories say that small particles merge together and, ultimately, to the planets, and comets, were confirmed.

Not eternal

At the beginning of the Rosetta mission, it was clear that the kometenjager not eternal data could continue forward. The spacecraft turned around the comet and took more and more away from the sun. The solar panels provided thus less energy for the transfer of data.

In 2014, considering the ESA for Rosetta in a state of hibernation. The spacecraft would be about five years, namely closer to the sun, and would in theory measurements can be carried out. But the chance was great that the equipment on board by that time will no longer work due to the large temperature swings and radiation in space.

The ESA has therefore decided to Rosetta checked to have them crash.
