<- Intro Text -> Microsoft announced to stop production of the Surface 3. It is doubtful whether there will be a successor
<-.! End of Intro Text ->
the production of the Surface 3 stops by the end of the year, Microsoft has announced. Although there was a lot of admiration for the different versions of this laptop / tablet line, it would appear that Microsoft no new Surface versions have in the pipeline.
The Surface 3 was released in May 2015, as budget-priced version of the Surface Pro series. Last October the Surface Pro 4 came out, along with the Surface Book, which looks more like a harder keyboard of a traditional laptop. References to new Surface hardware have since materialized.
Problems with processors
According to ZDNet, Microsoft had problems last year with Intel Skylake processors. Now the company would not jump at the latest processors – use in hardware and therefore to extend the introduction for themselves – KabyLake. In the Surface 3 was used the Cherry Trail Atom processor, but that processor line has not been updated anymore since the first quarter of 2015, signaling Ars Technica. This would be difficult to design a successor to the Surface 3. Postponement of the introduction of new hardware, Microsoft would also provide more space for the proper introduction of the Redstone wave of functional updates of Windows 10 whose Anniversary Update is the first. The second will follow in 2017. New hardware would only come in the spring of 2017.
Meanwhile, the inventory of the Surface 3 virtually dried up, Ars Technica notes. Especially with online stores is often impossible to buy and there is no known date of expected new availability.
