Android leak discovered by SMS – Telegraaf.nl

SAN FRANCISCO –

There is a leak rediscovered in Android phones. Researchers at security company Zimperium have a serious leak discovered in the software that hackers can break easily on the phone. Google has released a patch to plug the leak.

Criminals can easily take over the entire phone via a text message with hidden codes, the researchers report on NPR. The hackers need thus to only know a person’s telephone number in order to gain access to the device. The hacker thereby receives extensive powers such as activating the camera, watch the screen or tapping the microphone.

There is little known about the security issue, but it is clear that it is a puncture in the Stage Fright framework in Android. This piece of software is responsible for playing movies. An attacker can hide malware in the video, that once the movie starts enters into force.

Security Updates

During the security conference Black Hat, the beginning of August takes place need more details about the leak will be announced. Moreover, the leak, according to the researchers do not yet actively abused. Zimperium Google has already been informed in April. This has developed a patch and distributed to device manufacturers. This should release itself an update.

The flaw can be solved with security updates but the researchers doubt whether the problem is resolved for all devices. Many manufacturers update old machines no longer work. It is estimated that some 20 to, at best, 50 percent of Android devices will receive updates.

In late June researchers at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam even though a leak in the system Android. Criminals were able to get easy access to mobile phones allowing users to use a single Google username to control different devices
