Perseids this year extra special thanks to Jupiter – Knack.be

Who wants to formulate wishes, can stand or lie down however once outside in a dark place in a few nights, as we head to our planet again be produced by the meteor shower Perseids, some shooting stars.

Every summer draws the planet Earth through the Perseid meteor shower: left a cloud of dust from the comet Swift-Tuttle. Many particles are then to 60 km per second collision with the atmosphere of the Earth, causing a brief streak of light in the sky: a shooting star or meteor. Which disintegrates completely.

The activity of the meteor shower strengthened from August 8 to a maximum of the Public Observatory Urania in the night of 12 on August 13th. Due to the high position of the radiant (the place from which to look out the meteors of a swarm away) in the sky, you can see the largest number of Perseids in the second half of the night. Best time is around 3:30 pm.

The Dutch Research School for Astronomy NOVA also targets the night before, thanks to Jupiter. The giant planet moves every 12 years by the conscious stream of particles. The strong gravitational pull of the giant can provide condensations in the cloud particles, and thus additional meteors. That would be around 2:00 at 03.00, though it is difficult to predict.

To observe the meteor shower, you do not need a telescope or binoculars. Suffice it, however from dark places outside urban areas, with the naked eye to see at least 15 minutes to anywhere in the night sky. The light traces can flare up anywhere in the sky, but seem to come from the constellation Perseus. There may see dozens of meteors per hour.
