“New exoplanet discovered close to the earth” – NU.nl

It is a planet orbiting the nearest star outside our solar system, called Proxima Centauri.

The exoplanet is located at a distance of about 4.25 light years from Earth and may contain liquid water . It reports the German magazine Der Spiegel .

The discovery was made by a large telescope on the mountain La Silla in the east of Chile. The instrument, scientists from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) managed to detect small, regular fluctuations in the brightness of the light from the star Proxima Centauri.

These variations are probably caused by an exoplanet that runs along the star.

Water

the mysterious planet is believed to be in the habitable zone of the star. This means that the distance to the red-hot core of the star is big enough for the presence of liquid water, as the news reports Cantech Letter . In theory, there may be even simple life forms on the surface of the planet.

The ETF itself will not comment on the disclosure. According to Der Spiegel, the discovery of the new planet is not officially announced the end of August
