Review: Nexus 6P – Telegraaf.nl

The Nexus 6P is the first Nexus device made in China . The fast-growing Huawei made the all-metal device that Google is promoting its latest Android version. The device has the latest software features, but also the hardware specifications may be there

.

Appearance

The first thing you notice about the Nexus 6P is that the device is large and mostly very long because the side edges are kept narrow. The screen is also 5.7 inches tall. Huawei has managed to keep the unit quite thin. The aluminum housing provides a chic look and the whole is nicely finished. The most notable details are located at the back. The camera and flash are hidden in a shiny black bar that is slightly thicker than the rest of the housing. Below is the fingerprint scanner. The back may seem like a strange place for such a scanner, but in practice it works fine. The scanner is in the right place, if you pick up the phone, is your finger almost automatically. A little less convenient is the placement of the on / off button and volume buttons. These are very close to each other.

Hardware

The 5.7 inch AMOLED screen has a resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels. This produces a sharp and clear picture. The device runs on a 2.0 Ghz Snapdragon 810 processor with eight cores. When combined with 3GB of RAM this makes for a very powerful device. The available storage is a minimum of 32 GB, a possibility to expand it via microSD missing.

Charging is done via the new USB-C standard which allows for faster charging. The USB-c-port is located at the bottom of the unit. C advantage of USB is that the plug and port are symmetrical so you plug the wrong way can put into the port. It is a new standard and it means that with microUSB cables can not be connected to the device. Huawei does provide an adapter with usb c to standard USB so you can charge him via a standard USB connector and can connect it to the computer.

The battery has a capacity of 3450 mAh and is pretty. Even with intensive use doin certainly bring a day.

Camera

The Nexus 6P has a 12.3 megapixel camera at the rear and an 8 megapixel copy on the front. Now the number of megapixels does not say anything about the quality of the photos, but the other camera specifications are fine. Both outside and inside is the quality of shot pictures fine and the colors are quite natural. The camera can focus quickly because the autofocus with a laser determines where his objects.

With the camera on the back can be recorded videos in 4K. By default, however, the unit is set to Full HD quality. Also can be slow motion videos with 120 or 240 frames per second at 720p resolution. The camera on the front can not slow-motion images. The maximum resolution is 1080p.

Programs

Nexus devices run on the latest Android version. They are distinguished from other Android devices because there is no additional software shell of the manufacturer is over. Personally, I think such a bare Android version very pleasant, because you will not face eight handy with junk by the manufacturer. In the Play Store you can then download additional applications yourself.

The latest Android version, 6.0, Marshmallow, offers a number of minor improvements over its predecessor. Thus Doze feature ensures that a device is automatically put into sleep mode when not in use and also the App Standby saves battery power by reducing the power consumption of little-used apps.

Marshmallow also provides the ability to specify in an app which functions to have such access. The feature App Rights makes it possible to give apps per device component permission to use it. When installing an app you get therefore no long laundry list with more permissions. An app like WhatsApp for example, will only requesting access to the camera when you first want to take a photo and send it.

One of the most striking innovations is Now on Tap, an extension of Google Now. By pressing and holding the Home button in an app, the system analyzes the screen and displays relevant information from what you see. For example, when you read an article about a film, Now on Tap ensures that you get extra information about the film, for example from film database IMDB, or that you get to see what turns around the film. Unfortunately, the feature works only when the system language is English. It is not known yet when it comes in Dutch available.

Pricing and similar devices

The Nexus 6P is available from € 650 (32GB) and that’s pretty pricey for an Android device. The Nexus 5X (€ 479) is slightly less powerful specs and a slightly smaller 5.2 inch screen. This device, however, runs on the latest Android version. A number of existing devices already announced that they will soon receive an update to Marshmallow, which applies to include the HTC One M9 (€ 500) and the Sony Xperia Z5 (€ 600).

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge + (€ 680) Like the 6P a 5.7 inch screen. Same size screen of the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL (€ 650), which runs on Windows 10 Mobile. The iPhone 6 plus has a 5.5 inch screen and a price starting at € 800 (16GB).

Conclusion

With the Nexus line Google wants to show what’s possible with its latest operating system. With the new Nexus 6P succeeds so well in there. Huawei has a good first Nexus device delivered where actually very little on is to be regarded. The unit is large and you have to love. However, the appearance is anything but clumsy, thanks to the aluminum shell and the narrow ledges on the side. With the Nexus 6P you have a good phone in hands and the certainty that you are the first to receive new Android updates
