Smartwatch pioneer Pebble for a ‘next to nothing’ sold – NOS

It was just the absolute treasure among the nerds: the smart watch Pebble. Started by investeringssite Kickstarter and with big ambitions. The watch would even with the Apple Watch able to compete. But that didn’t work out.

The company is now sold to fitnessfabrikant Fitbit, reportedly for less than $ 40 million. The watches themselves do not go with the acquisition. That means that there is an end to the Pebble watches. Fitbit bought the company mostly for the software that Pebble the past few years has developed.

The consideration sounds like a lot of money, but it was in the techwereld the last few years almost normal for a few hundreds of millions of dollars to be sold. Especially if you’re in that world, a well-known brand.

E-inkscherm

The Pebbles are known for their so-called e-inkscherm, that looks like a kind of digital paper. It is more energy efficient than the screens of many other smartwatch, the battery lasts longer.

Pebble is not the only smartwatch maker that the heavy has. The general interest for smart watches seems to be decreasing. According to market researcher IDC, the sales of the last quarter by 50 percent, and IDC predicts for the holidays no good.

Apple ceo Tim Cook, the Apple Watch, a significant share of the market, is expected, however, still records to get.
