Astronomer Vera Rubin (88) death – NU.nl

Rubin died in a nursing home. The son of Rubin confirmed her death Monday. The astronomer was often tipped for the Nobel prize but did never.

She discovered in collaboration with Kent Ford that galaxies at the edges just as quickly reversed as in the centre. This finding spoke to a number of physical laws. The rotation just as quickly went she tried to explain on the basis of dark matter.

Rubin was the second female astronomer who was included in the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. In 1993, she received the National Medal of Science of former president Bill Clinton.
