Review: Super Mario Run has a surprisingly long breath – NU.nl

Let the topic where half the internet seems to fall right at the collar to summarize: you can use one of three levels of Super Mario Run for free download on your iPhone or iPad, for the rest of the game, you pay ten euro. That are the most smartphonegamers not used to and that is why you, for example, in the App Store a lot of negative reviews read. Apple does not on demo’s, but the free version of Super Mario Run is basically a demo. Does it taste like more, you pay once only ten euro.

learning platforms

What immediately stands out is that you as an experienced Mario gamer need to re-learn the game is to play. The gameplay is the best compare with the Rayman-runners for smartphones, where the main character automatically runs from left to right and you are on your screen you must tap to make him jump. That is, in fact, everything you do in Mario Run: Mario jump.

That Mario automatically runs, it means really that you experience from the old games to learn. You walk a block or coin over, you can no longer tackle, unless you have the level restart. In the beginning, some of that frustration, especially when you have a lot of enthusiasm, the five purple coins in each level by hiding want to collect.

Then there is something: the five mints in one 'run' collection, there is precisely the challenge. Yes, you should levels and, occasionally, re-start, but you learn the layout and the location of the special coins out of your head and eventually you are able. You have the five purple coins are collected, then you can get a further five special coins in the level to collect, and then even once. They are at other locations and are often a lot more difficult to get. The Levels are slightly modified to make it even harder to make.

Because the coins are increasingly difficult to manage, you start at a typical Nintendo-like way without saying strategies to consider. Mario automatically jumps over enemies, but lands you exactly on time on an enemy, jumps Mario higher and you can take that coin or tackle. Each level you start with two 'call', if you get hit Mario a little earlier in the level to restore.

At one point you realize that you call also manually switch to as a missed coin still to address; floors with arrows on it to let you backward jump. With this and more discovered strategies offers the simple-looking platformer suddenly quite a lot of depth.

Extra content

collect the special coins is really the main point of the game. You play in an hour through all the levels, but after a day or four intensive play we have still but a small portion of the special coins collected. However, Nintendo has extra content in the game is stopped in the form of two other 'modes': Toad Rally and build your own Mushroom Kingdom.

In Toad Rally race against other players, and try you in a short period of time as much as possible to collect the coins and as stylish as possible. At the end is compared to the person with the most coins. That, combined with how many Toads there have cheered for your stylish moves, determines the winner.

you Win, then you will receive a number of Toads from your opponent in your own Mushroom Kingdom come to live. Here you can houses for your Toads place, as well as hills, flowers, and other decorations, and even special objects and buildings that are extra benefits, including other playable characters. You buy all the buildings and decorations with coins that you collect in the game.

The two extra modes are not as in depth as the main mode, but give the game an extra competitive and creative element. This works in principle fine, but it is up to your personal preference whether you that was all worth it, just to Mushroom Kingdom to expand. For us, it is that last aspect of the game slightly too minimalist for a long time by enthralled to continue.

The game itself is at the area of gameplay and replayability, however, as a house. Where we at a lot of iPhone games after a few hours or drop out, we continue daily with this app to open to play a few levels. This is mainly thanks to the solid gameplay, as you would expect from an experienced developer like Nintendo. Despite the well-known appearance of a modern Mario platformer that we already can dream, provides Super Mario Run a new way of with Mario games, one that after some getting used to, at least as fun. Mario also feels on an iPhone at home.

Conclusion

Super Mario Run looks and feels like a solid two-dimensional Mario game, but offers a new way for Mario to drive. Initially frustrates that, because of your experience need to unlearn, but ultimately rewards Run you are surprisingly in-depth gameplay. The main game has enough meat on the bones for a long time to captivate, but the extra modes lack depth and are nothing more than a temporary distraction.
