‘Ringing scammers difficult to address’ – Telegraaf.nl

AMSTERDAM –

It is very difficult to trace these criminals call people at home and posing as Microsoft employees. That says Martijn Egberts, rural cybercrime prosecutor. “Unfortunately, the groups that carry this often involved working from abroad.”

The scammers call random people and say, often in very poor English that they were from the security department of Microsoft. They would have discovered that the computers of their victims was infected and offer extremely helpful to solve the ‘problem’. Before that needs to be installed only one small program. And there it goes wrong. Through this program, the criminals take complete control over the PC. “Then there is the criminal offenses committed with it,” said Egberts.

The cyber officer understands that people fall for it. But who gets such a call should immediately realize that this is not pure coffee. “We’re trying to back investigations through technical and financial trails we can find. So we can in some cases lead to a suspect.” Quickly make a declaration according Egberts therefore important. “The sooner digital detection gets involved, the more spores usually still present.”
