‘Dutch server used by hacks Democratic Party’ – NOS

Russian hackers have according to the American experts used the privéserver of a Dutch employee privacy organization Bits of Freedom. That reports the Volkskrant.

The relevant Bits of Freedom-worker, Rejo Zenger, offers home a server, which is part of the so-called Tor-network. Through this network, users can, in theory, anonymous use of the internet.

The traffic from this network runs along many different intermediate stations, making it, in principle, not to follow. The server of Zenger is one of those stations. In total, 140 of the 900 IP addresses, which is on the list of the Us Homeland Security department to appear, to become part of the network.

the goal

While Tor is used by criminals who anonymously weapons, drugs or child pornography trading, is that not the purpose of the network. The Tor Project explains on its website that Tor is meant for people who abide by the law, maintain privacy, and that this still is mistakenly reserved for criminals.

Zenger shares this view about the importance of anonymous internet and has for this reason, the server offered. “Of course it is annoying that the wrong people are using my server, but I can’t control at that exercise”, he tells the NOS.

According to Zenger, is the use of his server is not remarkable, because the Netherlands is an important part of the infrastructure of the internet. In addition, he believes, people know that their server is offering, in most cases, not those who in any way makes use of.

to avoid

“This kind of attack, you can’t avoid,” says Zenger. “It is now possible Russian hackers, but the next time it may be from Chinese or Iranian angle. Criminals do this too.” That the Tor network now is used, says, according to him, nothing.

Zenger thinks that it’s more important to look at how the hack is performed. “The spies would have made use of vulnerabilities in the traffic of the Democratic party. There might need to be done.”
