The Dutch Safety board was the target of Russian hacks – NU.nl

writes NRC handelsblad. The hack attempt would almost have been the same as the way in which the Russian hackers, according to U.s. intelligence services at the U.s. Democratic Party managed to break in.

From internal data, it appears that the hack on 29 september 2015 took place. The report of the OVV with the findings about the disaster with the MH17 flight was almost finished and would be two weeks later be presented.

E-mail

In the morning and found a OVV-employee an e-mail message in his mailbox, to his colleague, who him recommended to log in again. The mail would come from someone who would be responsible for the security of the e-mail account.

Had that employee done that, the hackers can gain access to the systems of the Dutch Research council for Safety. This technique is spear phishing called, and it was also used in the hack of the U.s. Democratic Party.

TrendMicro, a Japanese-American security company, reported earlier that the hackers who were involved in the failed hack attempt in the OVV, closely involved in the Russian government
